Hidden costs of a hair transplant: what you’ll really pay

Separate the treatment price from your wider budget

The total you budget for a hair transplant may include more than the surgical quote: travel, time away from work and any treatment you choose separately. That does not mean every clinic adds the same extras, or that a low advertised starting price will inevitably become a much larger bill.

Start with the published Manchester prices, then ask for a quote for your assessed plan. The current FUE table lists £1,999 for 500 grafts and £3,999 for 2,000 grafts; DHI and FUT start at £3,999. A national price range is not a substitute for the clinic’s own written offer.

Which items need a clear answer?

Ask the clinic to mark each relevant item as included, separately charged, optional or not part of your plan. An empty line or a broad phrase such as “complete aftercare” leaves room for misunderstanding.

Budget item Question to ask
Assessment and screening Is there a consultation or test fee before surgery?
Surgical session Does the total cover the named surgeon, team, premises and anaesthetic?
Medication Which medicines are supplied after the procedure and what quantity is included?
Aftercare products Are any recommended washing or care products supplied, and would replacements cost extra?
Reviews and support Which appointments are included, for how long, and who can I contact with a concern?
PRP or ongoing medication Is this recommended for my circumstances, and is it optional or separately charged?
Further procedures Is another surgical stage part of this plan, and is its price included?
Booking changes What are the deposit, cancellation and rescheduling terms?

The Manchester quote guide explains how to compare graft numbers, procedure choices and written inclusions. Keep the clinic’s answers with your quote rather than relying on a general description elsewhere on its website.

A simple way to compare totals

Use three separate lines: the confirmed treatment price; any separately agreed treatment charges; and your own travel or time-off costs. Avoid adding optional treatment to a comparison unless you would actually choose it.

For illustration only, a £4,000 written treatment quote plus £100 of travel would mean a £4,100 budget before any other agreed expense. These are arithmetic examples, not Manchester clinic charges. If the second quote already includes an item, do not add it again.

Ask whether the final total includes any applicable tax rather than assuming a percentage should be added. For instalments, compare the total amount payable and the written payment terms as well as the monthly figure.

Aftercare and later treatment

Aftercare appointments, contact support and a later cosmetic procedure are different things. Ask what happens if you need an unplanned review, who assesses a concern and how charges for any further treatment would be decided. Do not assume “aftercare included” means every future procedure is free.

Read the Manchester aftercare guide alongside the instructions provided for your own procedure. General web guidance does not replace the treating team’s advice.

The NHS explains that hair transplants carry surgical risks, including bleeding, infection and poor graft growth, and that existing hair can continue to thin. Discuss the follow-up plan before booking; a price comparison cannot predict an individual result.

Confirm where your appointment takes place

Manchester Hair Transplant Clinic is at 82 King Street, Manchester, M2 4WQ. Confirm the location of your consultation, surgery and follow-up before arranging travel.

Include return visits in your planning where they are required. Ask the treating team about transport after the procedure and the likely time away from your particular job. Someone with a desk job and someone doing physical work may need different arrangements.

What to check before accepting a quote

Check the named doctor on the GMC register and the treating provider and operating location with the regulator for the country where surgery will take place. In England, check the CQC.

Patient photographs should be discussed with their graft count, treated area and follow-up timing. Ask how the plan relates to your own starting position instead of treating another patient’s photographs as a promised result.

You can ask the Manchester team for a consultation and written quote. State the areas you want to discuss and ask for the inclusions, exclusions and payment terms to be made clear before you decide.

Questions and answers

What extra costs should I ask about before a hair transplant?

Ask about tests, postoperative medication, aftercare products, follow-up appointments, optional treatments and any planned additional surgical session. Confirm which are included, separately charged or not part of your plan, then budget for your own travel and time away from work.

Does every hair transplant quote exclude aftercare?

No. Inclusions differ between quotes. Read the written list of appointments, products and support rather than assuming either that everything is included or that everything is an extra.

Should I add PRP to every hair transplant budget?

Do not assume PRP is compulsory or included. Ask whether it is recommended for your individual circumstances, what is proposed and what it would cost before agreeing to it.

Does aftercare cover another hair transplant?

Do not assume it does. Ask separately about routine follow-up, assessment of concerns and the terms for any additional or corrective procedure.

How can I compare two quotes fairly?

Compare the planned procedure, treatment areas, graft estimate, named surgeon, location, aftercare and final price. Include optional treatment only if you intend to choose it, and keep personal travel costs separate from the clinic’s charges.
