A hair transplant is one possible response to hair loss. Understanding the cause comes first, and surgery may be unsuitable or unnecessary.

Start with a diagnosis

If you are worried about new or changing hair loss, speak to your GP. Tell them about the timing, scalp symptoms, medicines, recent illness and the effect on your wellbeing. The NHS hair loss guidance recommends understanding the cause before approaching a commercial clinic.

Medical treatment

Finasteride and minoxidil are treatments for male pattern hair loss; minoxidil can also be used for female pattern hair loss. They do not work for everyone and benefits depend on continued use. Suitability and possible side effects need discussion with a clinician or pharmacist. Women should not use finasteride.

Our medication guide explains questions to ask. Do not stop prescribed medicine or combine hair-loss products without checking that it is appropriate.

Cosmetic options

A change of haircut, concealing fibres, a hair system or a wig may help achieve the appearance you want. Ask about upkeep, cost, comfort and scalp care. These options do not require a decision about surgery.

Be cautious with treatment promises

For supplements, laser devices or injectable treatments, ask what evidence supports the specific product for your diagnosis. Check the expected benefit, uncertainties, risks and ongoing cost. Photographs and testimonials are not a guarantee that you will respond.

When surgery may enter the discussion

A transplant requires a separate assessment of scalp health, donor hair, the pattern of loss and longer-term goals. Medical treatment, monitoring or no treatment may be a better recommendation. A consultation should give you time to understand those choices.
