The new hair-loss pill headline: what the 86% figure actually means

A report that 86% of trial participants noticed improvement is different from saying a pill increased everyone’s hair coverage by 86%. Those two statements should not be used interchangeably.

What the company reported

In its April 2026 announcement, Veradermics described results from Study 302 of VDPHL01, an extended-release oral minoxidil formulation. After six months, 86.0% of participants in the twice-daily group reported improvement in hair coverage on the study’s patient-reported scale, compared with 35.6% receiving placebo. The once-daily group figure was 79.3%.

The company’s trial announcement is the source of those figures. They describe the proportion reporting improvement, not an 86% increase in hair count for each person.

What to look for beyond the headline

Check the people included, the comparison group, the measurement used and the duration of follow-up. Read the safety results alongside the growth results. A favourable short-term finding does not answer every question about longer-term benefit, suitability or side effects.

A trial result is not prescribing advice

Do not try to recreate a study regimen with products bought online. Different formulations and doses cannot be assumed to be interchangeable. Ask a qualified prescriber about any proposed oral hair-loss medicine and check the current regulatory status of the particular product.

Should you put an assessment on hold?

You can have the cause of thinning assessed while research continues. A clinician can explain existing options and whether monitoring is appropriate. A news story cannot tell you which treatment fits your medical history or type of hair loss.

Our hair-loss medication guide provides questions for that discussion. A transplant involves a separate assessment of donor hair, scalp health and realistic goals.
